Childrens Eye Tests

Have you noticed a change in your child’s vision? Children can’t always tell us when they have problems with their vision, but signs such as a change in behaviour such as holding object very close to their face, blinking a lot, or sitting close to the TV can all be indications of an issue with your child’s sight.

At Dyer & Scott, we provide a comprehensive children’s eye test to give you a complete view of your child’s eye health. We take the time to discuss any issues with you and will tailor the test to the abilities and age of your child.

Don't worry if your child is not yet able to identify letters or numbers, we have alternative tests, engaging for children to enable us to build a picture of your child's eye health.

Myopia in Children

Short-sightedness ( Myopia) is most likely to develop between the ages of 6 – 13, and sometimes it can be difficult to know when your child is first experiencing visual problems. Identifying short-sightedness at an early stage is an important factor in limiting the impact that blurry vision has on their childhood, as well as also reduce the risk of developing eye problems in future. Luckily, there are signs which you can look out for:

  • Squinting or closing one eye to see better
  • Complaints of blurred vision when looking at distant objects
  • Sitting very close to the television or holding books close to the face
  • Frequent headaches or eye strain
  • Difficulty seeing the board at school

What is Involved in a Child Eye Test

Arrange an appointment with a member of our experienced team to discuss any current problems with your child’s eye sight.

Our optometrist carries out the eye examination as usual, with steps tailored to your child’s needs – such as recognising images instead of letters.

If your child required glasses, our registered dispensing opticians will work with you and your child to choose an option that meets their needs. Contact lenses may also be an option.

Is it your Childs First Eye Examination

It’s important to book an eye test if you notice any change in your child’s vision. Some parents choose to have their child’s eyes tested routinely as a precaution.

An eye test should be carried out every two years. After the first visit, your optician may recommend that a different frequency is appropriate based on their needs.

Things to look out for include sitting close to the TV, holding objects very close to their face, blinking a lot, eye rubbing, or one eye turning in or out.

Yes they can. For children who aren’t fully sufficient in reading we can use charts made up of images, as well as other methods to test their eye sight.
